Clarecastle Heritage Walks

Clarecastle History Walk
Walk through the streets of the village and learn some of its fascinating history.  View the Church of SS. Peter & Paul of 1839, the first National School of 1841, Bannatyne's Grain Store and Market House, Main Street, the 13th C. Castle and 17th C. Army Barracks, the Quay Road and Scott's Grain Store of 1846, the Port of Clare and its long maritime history.
Guide: Dr. Joe Power
Starting Point: The Chruch car-park.
Suitability: A gentle walk of about an hour in duration.
Time: 7pm

Killone Abbey Graveyard and St. John's Well
A talk on the history of St. John's Well and Pattern Day, the numerology of Killone and the stories behind the gravestones in and around the Abbey.  Over 450 gravestone inscriptions have been recorded going back to 1707 or earlier.

Starting Point: Killone Abbey after Mass
Suitability: A gentle walk along graveled paths, about an hour in duration.
Time: 

Old Clare Hill Graveyard
Stand in this old graveyard and learn a little of the stories of the stones that date from 1743 or earlier.  There are about 360 gravestone inscriptions recorded here but there are many more graves that are unmarked or marked only with a simple field-stone. Here about the Cholera Plot of 1832 and the grave of Fr. Daniel O'Brien, the soldier's graves and the tragic story of George Calladine and his family.

Starting Point: Old Clare Hill Graveyard
Suitability: About an hour in duration
Time: 7pm

Islandmagrath Eco-Farm
A guided tour of the Eco-Farm history from ancient times to the large land-reclamation projects of the home of the McGrath Clan, the flora and fauna of the Fergus Estuary.

Starting Point: The Eco-Farm, Islandmagrath
Suitability: A gentle walk along graveled paths, about an hour in duration.
Time: 7pm

Abbey to Abbey
A walk from Clare Abbey to Killone Abbey via the Pilgrim's Walk off the Rocky Road in Ballybeg.  A short history of Clare Abbey will be given at the start of the walk. A similar talk will be given on the Pilgrim's Walk, on St. John's Well and on Killone Abbey at the end of the walk.

Starting Point: Clare Abbey. Limited car parking will be available in the abbey car park as well as car parking along the approach road to the Abbey, excluding the lenght of road between the Railway bridge and the entrance to the Abbey.
Suitability: A walk of just under 4 miles, mainly along main roads but for the final mile, the route crosses farmland and through rough woodland terrain and may not be suitable for everyone. Common sense should prevail here. Markers will show the way. Strong walking shoes are advisable. Refreshments will be served in the car park in Ballybeg Woods on the Rocky Road. Transport will be provided for the return journey from Killone Abbey to the cards left close to Clare Abbey.

Flora & Fauna of the Fergus Estuary
A talk on Flora and wildlife of the River Fergus and Estuary and an introduction to the Burren-like plants that grow mostly unseen in the area.

Starting Point: Clarecastle Quay
Suitability: A gentle stroll of about 200 meters and the talk should last about an hour.
Time: 3pm

Pilgrim's Walk 23rd June 2013
Walk the path that our ancestors walked on their way to St. John's Well at Killone since pre-Christian times. With the goodwill of the local landowners, the path has been reopened for the celebration of the traditional Mass at the Well. The walk will be times to coincide with the liturgical services there by Bishop O' Reilly.

Starting Point: Ballybeg car-park in the Rocky road.  This has limited car-spaces and it will not be possible to park on the road.  So.car pooling is advisable. Transport will be provided back to the car-park after the mass for those wishing to avail of this service. 
Suitability: The route crosses farmland and through rough woodland terrain and may not be suitable for everyone. Strong walking-shoes are advisable.
Time: The distance is less than a mile in lenght and will take about 30 minutes. Assembly wll be in the car park.
